Personality:To the locals of Ryslig he's Mister Mystery, a charming and charismatic showman. Monsters recognized him as a charlatan and thief. However, to his great niece and nephew, he's a cranky, gross, weird old man with the face of a troll and heart of a lion.
Son of tough New Jersey native Filbrick Pines, Stan inherited his father's stubbornness and mothers silver tongue. As a boy, he dreamed of adventure sailing the sea in search of treasure and babes with his brother at his side. Some might consider it childish to hold onto such a fantasy but it never stopped Stan. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his child-like qualities. For a summer caretaker, Stan is incredibly irresponsible. He allows his niece and nephew to wander freely, carry a weapon around town and even encourages them to avenge him after his wax duplicate is murdered. Stan can also act out of sheer impulse, stealing and lashing out in anger without considering the consequences of his actions. At times he can even be violent, threatening to break Toby Determined on Pioneer Day and taking his frustration out on the Gleeful's decor when he learns the little troll is seeing his niece.
His father is easily the core of his money badgering, a man Stan describes as tough as a cinder block and not easily impress. He signed Stan up for boxing lessons to toughen him up, something Stan initially thought to be punishment but later considered a push to bring the better out of him. This made Stan want to impress his father. But before he could he received an even harder push out the door when he was kicked out of his home as a teenager. After Stan accidentally broke his brother's project, dashing his father's hopes of leaving Glass Shard Beach and collecting potential millions, Filbrick declared Stan was not welcome back until he had made a fortune of his own. This left lasting impression on Stan and led to the decision that he would not return until he’d made something of himself and made his family proud. Despite his best efforts, however, Stanley Pines never returned to Glass Shard Beach.
Stan admits to his niece and nephew that he has little to no regard for other people. Whether he has to cheat, steal, or lie to obtain what he wants, Stan's determination has no moral boundaries. As a "retired" con artist he's well-versed with turning on the charm to earn a buck. He's especially good at lying to people's faces but when unexpectedly confronted Stan has a tendency to stumble over his words and show visible signs of discomfort. Due to his tactlessness, honesty fails to serve Stan any better. He will voice his opinion when it comes to mundane everyday matters but, much to the dismay of others, with no filter. If his brain says that lady's got an ugly baby, his mouth says, "whoa, lady, you got one ugly baby."
When awoken by the sound of mockery he is notably pleased and eager to partake. Stan loves to make fun of others, even his family at risk of ridicule. He is cynical, greedy and completely mannerless. According to Stan just saying 'please' gives him a burning sensation. Overall he's a pretty big jerk.
As a frequent liar, Stan is a man with as many secrets as he has wrinkles. He speaks seldom about his past and only to those he truly confides in. Even then it may not be an honest representation of events; Stan said his life in the late 60's was great but in reality lived in his car and survived on scratch tickets. He refuses to ask for help and struggles to show weakness or appear vulnerable. He tries to mask this through lies, denying that he's crying while actively doing or has a crush on Lazy Susan after a failed attempt at flirting.
Hardened by a life on the run, it can take Stan time to warm up to people. Once he comes to accept someone however they've got a friend for life. Going so far as to punch a pterodactyl in the face for his niece and attempt to get a day removed from the calendar for his son handyman, Stan will go great lengths for those he loves. He claims he's a coward but whether it's an army of zombies or an all-powerful demon, if it means protecting his family, Stan always finds the courage he needs to face a challenge.
Behind his rough exterior, Stan is caring, protective, and loyal to those he deems close (even if he pretends otherwise). He admits he lied to his niece and nephew regarding the strange happenings in Gravity Fall to protect them and when the two went looking for monsters he would often try to mislead them with other tasks. Though perhaps a little reluctant, Stan has even proven to put the kid's needs before his own and put his feelings aside for the greater good. Whether it means teaming up with a Fourther (GASP!) to save his niece from a blob or keeping her stupid pig the rest of the summer, he'll do his best to come through at the end of the day.
While far from a role model, Stan tries to bring out the best in his family. Sometimes it makes him seem unfavorable. We see this specifically with Dipper who, in Stan's efforts to toughen up as his father had him, thought Stan was hard on him out of dislike. He tries to help the kids the best he can from helping Mabel overcome her fear of clay to destroying a relationship with his nephew. I have more on his relationship with the twins in my original app here.

Roleplay Sample: Stan wakes with a start, his head pounding and heart aching. Memories of summer hit him all at once: the machine, his brother, Bill... It all feels too real, too long and weird to be a dream. But when he tightens his fists he finds not his blankets but sand beneath his palms. He opens his eyes to be immediately blinded by the sunlight.
"Sweet lord! What is this?!"
His throat feels dry, the hot air to rush into his lungs of no aid as he gasps for breath. The rest of his body is heavy, just raising his arm to block the sun's rays a challenge when it feels like led. He's used to waking with random body pains but not every pain all at once. Everything literally hurts. He lets out a disgruntled grunt and closes his itchy eyes.
He remembers the Snicken, devious creatures that ran about Bavan seizing all they could from merchants tables. They were monsters, just as himself, a product of the fog that crept over the peninsula. He had been trapped here, a prisoner of the Fog God. But then he was on the bow of the Stan O' War II, manning the sails as they fought to stray from the storm ahead. Following the smell of the salty ocean he turns back to the water, hoping to find signs of a shipwreck, his brother, anything to reinforce the memory that plays in his head, but the beach is barren.
Stan shakes his head and tries to focus. "Come on Stan, you've woken up in tighter spots than this. It's just like Mojave. Just gotta get moving."
Taking a deep breath, he begins to drag himself through the sand toward the nearest patch of shade. He's not entirely sure if the images in his head are real but he's certain of one thing: he has to look for his family. He knows can't protect them but Gods be damned if he won't try.
"UV radiation do your worst!" He shouts, challenging the sun.
